Living Water Book Review

Living Water to Refresh Your Soul Book Cover

★★★★

God is in the details and can be found in even the smallest elements in nature. Just imagine. A flower as intricate as a marigold or a lake reflection of guardian trees—both as mysterious as their Creator. Yet God cares deeply for you, the only creation made in his image.

In this world of shifting sand, we need something beautiful to ground us in the present, and author Tracy L. Smoak brings tranquility with her pictorial devotional Living Water.

One of my favorite ways of spending time with God is in nature. His existence is pretty undeniable there. Author and photographer Tracy Smoak uses photographs of serene water scenes as the foundation of her devotional that focuses on refreshing one’s soul through God’s living water. The photographs add a visual dimension that differentiates Living Water to Refresh Your Soul from other devotionals.

Ms. Smoak captured beautiful waterways in Florida from the Green Swamp to Lake Griffin. Each of the thirty photographs are accompanied by a Bible verse, a quick fact about the area pictured, a short prayer, and a short “faith step”. Each faith step is a brief encouragement for the reader to move forward in their relationship with God.

I read the ebook but I think the photos would be appreciated most in the physical book, although they are beautiful in any case. The hardcover book would be worthy of displaying at home, church, or office, or given as a gift.

Who would benefit from this book?

This book has a potentially wide audience. I see a good fit for anyone who likes devotionals, picture book/coffee table book fans, Florida residents, and nature enthusiasts. I also see this book as a fit for Christians who aren’t big readers, because the text is short and the photos are a big part of the experience.

How this book affected me

As a person who loves finding God in nature, I enjoyed and appreciated Living Water to Refresh Your Soul, and as a part-time Floridian, the photos made me feel like “home”. As a devotional reader, I would have enjoyed longer commentary and reflection.
