Coasting through a life filled with distractions? It’s time to live with value, purpose, and meaning.
Michael Westover looked in the mirror one day and wondered what the point of it was. He had a successful career in health care, a stable family, and great friendships. Yet, he felt aimless. His life was full—meetings to further his career, hours of TV, activities with his children—but was it worthwhile?
Digging through centuries of research and theory, Michael set out on a philosophical journey to find connection and meaning. Why do countless people coast through life as he had, feeling lost and disconnected, yet others approach each day feeling worthy and valuable?
It turns out that living a life that matters is simpler than you may think. Following five types of commitment that are research-proven to give life more meaning, you can build a worthwhile life and avoid the cycle of distractions.
As society becomes more obsessed with finding happiness through instant gratification, we’re kidding ourselves about where we’ll find the most satisfying life. Author Michael Westover’s A Worthwhile Life dispels the myth that happiness is the ultimate target for nirvana. Instead, he makes the case for how to find meaning, build connection, and cultivate purpose.
Westover includes many stories and examples that help the reader relate to the longing to find meaning in life and the various ways that people go about finding it. He doesn’t offer a ‘one-size-fits-all’ formula for happiness. He offers the foundation upon which a reader can choose to build a ‘worthwhile’ life, which is not based on happiness.
I appreciated Westover’s multi-faceted approach in various ways to create a worthwhile life. He includes the sense of meaning and purpose that can come from spirituality (or lack of), but the possible avenues extend far past those. It’s a fairly simple concept but requires the reader’s effort to make it happen.
