Author Michael R. Emlet’s Saints, Sufferers & Sinners aims to show Christian leaders how to counsel and guide others while loving them as God loves us. The principles of loving others in wise, truthful, and compassionate ways apply to anyone we encounter, whether it be family members, church members, or patients.

Emlet’s guidance is based on a solid Scriptural foundation that’s intermingled throughout the book. He includes numerous practical examples that might exist within a family, in a church setting, or during a formal counseling session. The key topics are broken into segments that explore the important aspects of each: Understanding People, Loving Others as Saints, Loving Others as Sufferers, Loving Others as Sinners, and Remaining Balanced in Ministry.

Not only will the reader learn the best practices for counseling someone from a Christian perspective, but will also get a beautiful reminder of the humanity behind every hurting person.

The purpose of Saints, Sufferers & Sinners didn’t apply to my life specifically because I’m not in a role where I guide people in regards to their struggles. However, this book gave me an appreciation for the ways to keep a Christian foundation when speaking with friends or family members about personal challenges.

This book gives many examples and various approaches to counseling or mentoring from a Christian perspective. The concepts apply to a family member or friend, but Saints, Sufferers & Sinners would be most helpful for those who truly counsel, including youth leaders, school counselors, educators, and mentors. Even those trained in counseling could benefit from the ideas and suggestions discussed in this book to ensure they keep a Christian perspective.
