Inspiring guidance for husbands to 'Discover What It Means To Love Your Wife Like Christ Loves The Church'.
Author Paul Harris’s indiscretions could have cost him his marriage. Instead, he fought to keep his marriage intact and God put it on his heart to explore the meaning of Ephesians 5:25. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. (NIV) What does it really mean to love your wife like Christ loves the Church? At first glance, it seems like a no-brainer. Of course, a husband loves his wife. But when Harris dug into the deeper meaning, he uncovers some unexpected and powerful revelations.
Harris has admittedly been to hell and back in his marriage. He fell into a trap that snares many well-intentioned spouses. When we believe we’re doing ‘God’s work’, does it mean we can neglect our marriage? When husbands indulge in other desires, are they ‘loving their wives like Christ loves the church’?
The exploration of Ephesians 5:22-24 is particularly insightful. Harris tackles the ‘wives must submit’ phase in a surprising and refreshing light. Husbands should be worthy of their wives' respect. They need to earn it.
Heart of a Husband poses a tough challenge for husbands. But when you consider the ways that Jesus showed love for His bride (the Church – us), it was no easy path. He died for us, after all. With that standard, the bar is set high for a husband to love his wife in a similar way.
Each chapter ends with a prayer, questions for self-reflection, and a place to write down thoughts. The assertions made are based on Scripture and all are presented clearly and concisely.
When I received the request to review Heart of a Husband, I saw the book had all 5-star reviews. Twenty-two reviews were all 5-stars – highly unusual in today’s book market. I contacted Mr. Harris, congratulated him on the wonderful and plentiful reviews, but warned that I’m somewhat stingy with 5-star reviews. If he was ‘expecting’ a 5-star review, maybe he’d want to reconsider requesting the review – yes, a tad blunt! After reading Heart of a Husband, I actually chuckled when I realized it was worthy of a 5-star review after all. Powerful and inspired points are skillfully made in this book. I learned lessons I will apply to my own marriage as a wife.
Any husband can learn something valuable from this book. Husbands who are trying to lead Christian marriages would find this book compelling. Husbands who are fighting to save their marriage will find guidance in Heart of a Husband.
