Guess How Much God Loves You is the story of seven-year-old Lucy Lu, a colorful, creatively curious first-grader, who is starting to have serious questions about God. How old is He? Does He sleep? What does He do all day? And the biggest one of all-does God love me? After one particularly hard day of being bullied by her classmates at school, Lucy feels like she doesn’t matter. She sits with Papa Joe, who has promised to answer her questions about God, launching them onto a journey to discover God’s never-changing, never-failing, never-ending love. What follows is a wild adventure through the Bible, where Lucy and her papa find themselves in the middle of each page of the exciting story of God’s love and faithfulness for all people throughout all of history.
7-year-old Lucy Lu is feeling down. Her classmates are being mean. She knows her grandfather loves her, but she questions whether God loves her and if she really matters. Her natural curiosity about God prompts an open discussion with her Papa Joe. Papa Joe uses the Creation story to describe God’s love for Lucy Lu, and for all of us. As Lucy Lu cruises through the seven days of creation on Papa Joe’s scooter, she comes to understand God’s immense love.
Author Karen Ferguson uses the Creation story creatively to convey two major themes – Creation and God’s love – in one entertaining story. The full-color illustrations complement the story well.
Guess How Much God Loves You would lend itself well to a Sunday school lesson or classroom discussion.

I was also born in Cleveland many years ago (1937). I was Catholic but drifted away after high school and college to mainly just not interested. I have become very interested in politics, our country, and our Constitution, and I noticed that liberals have become very secular and even anti-American, while people I tend to agree with our much more religious. The more I listened to them and their commitment to Christ, I realized that I need to try and find Christ.
This may be a very strange way to begin my search for Christ. Please recommend books and other materials that should help me begin my search.
Thank you, Jay DuVernay
Hello Jay, I’m happy to hear that your heart is coming around to wanting to know Christ. As a former Catholic, I know that sometimes we can get bogged down in the rituals of religion and miss out on actually ‘knowing’ God and Christ in the process. I think reading books is a good way to immerse yourself back into faith. Two books I can recommend are ‘Jesus Skeptic’ by John S. Dickerson and ’12 Rules for a Christian Life’ by Chris Greer. They each have a different purpose. Jesus Skeptic is a journalist’s exploration of Christ’s life. This one can help the skeptical part of your brain that probably wonders if all this is actually true. 12 Rules for a Christian Life is a beautiful and practical guide to living with Christ as the center of your life. PS and most importantly, you will find Christ by reading the Bible. If you don’t have a Bible yet, there are many online apps that have a verse of the day and some have a short video that accompany them. They usually offer various ways that you can dip deeper into the Bible, such as reading plans, devotionals, and Bible study. If you do purchase a Bible, choose a “study Bible” that includes notes that explain the context and make the verses more relatable and understandable. Also, sit quietly, talk to God (aloud or mentally), then listen for His replies. I hope all these tips help you kickstart your journey and I pray you find Christ. He’s waiting for you!
